How To Stick To Your Goals in 2018

2018 will be here before you know… xyz days to be exact. Let's start with 3 foundational maxims when it comes to living an abundant and fulfilled life. These are:

• The best way to predict your future is to create it.

• The greatest form of abuse in this world is neglect.

• If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

How this applies to your future is profoundly important for the simple reason that if you don't invest the time to think through and create your own life plan for 2018 and beyond, you will be guilty of neglect, and by default, you will in fact compromise your future. Worst of all, you will fall into someone else's plan for your life, and I assure you it is not going to include much for you to brag about.

This is the only life you've got...isn't it worth even a few minutes of your time to decide what you want,
plan for how you are going to get it, prioritise…by when?

Your life, career and future will not go accordingly to plan, if you do not have a plan. Everything counts.

You've most likely also had some resolutions and now have made some goals to make them a reality. Join the club!  Many people have done that. This is going to be my best year and hopefully yours too!

Today lets take a take a look at how to stick to your goals.  What are the difficulties?  Why do people seem to break them?

Firstly, you are on the right track, because setting goals is the first step in you "living the dream". It is vital to achieving what you have always desired to have or desired to be. 

Although setting goals helps paint a clearer picture of your future, it may only keep you motivated for so long. After sometime, we get bored or distracted and eventually completely lose our way around and if you want to be successful, that is something you must avoid. 

Here are a few tips so you won't steer away from the goals that you always wanted to pursue:

• Your beliefs
First you make your beliefs. Then your beliefs make you. And when you go out in the world, the world will support your beliefs. Be aware of the sort of beliefs you are holding under the surface.
Identify your goals
Firstly, be clear about what you really want. Do not settle with others' opinion about what you want to achieve. 
What matters here is what you want to do in life, and if it motivates you to become successful. By all means, stop listening to others who don't really know what you desire, and start planning out your dream - one that keeps you awaken, not one that puts you into a deeper sleep.
• Break the goal into pieces. 

Some of your goals may look too big and impossible to accomplish which is another reason why you might take your eyes off your goals. When it already seems too impossible, analyse your goal piece by piece. See what you can do about it; sometimes, you just need to reset.

• Get organised. 
This part is actually self-explanatory but often neglected. It assumes that you have already chosen the top priorities on your list of goals.

• Consider getting an accountability partner.
You know who to talk to when all else fails. That person can be your accountability partner in setting and realising your goals. Telling someone about your goals will help remind you of what you need to do to realise your dreams. That person will also remind you to work hard and motivate you to get back up when you feel discouraged.

• Avoid toxic energy. 
Toxic energy can be found everywhere... from people around you, your work, your environment, or even a Facebook post that stressed you out. 

You can always choose to ignore them. Remember the 90/10 principle voiced by Stephen Covey. It states that "10% of life is made up of what happens to you, and 90% of life is decided by how you react".  Whenever you perceive anything toxic coming your way, avoid it as soon as possible.

Holding on to your goal can be very challenging; however, that is the only way for you to see your dreams unfold in front of you, one after another. So, one small step at a time and laser sharp focus. 

As Henry David Thoreau so eloquently stated, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have always imagined."
