From me to you - transformation

26 Mar 2014   Shanti Gowans
Yoga is not education, it is transformation.

Life is not an exercise about success, but perseverance. It's hidden agenda lies in the ability to rise up from a challenge, to get up one more time than we've fallen, and keep moving forward. When things get 'hard', and no matter how bleak things look, we are being reminded that this too is for the best, and we need to re-orientate our thinking to this realisation.

'There are no problems, simply opportunities for growth' - this gets us through almost everything. It means that whatever happens, does so that we can grow. It prevents us from blaming others, including ourselves. It frames a situation, not as something overwhelming that is impossible to solve, but as a puzzle that can be worked out. The process of working it out is where real growth takes place. Words are powerful; as soon as we reframe our situation from seeing "problems" to "opportunities," we pull down the covers, get out of bed, pull up our boot straps and rise to the occasion. No one wants problems, but who doesn't want opportunities?

Life is the most precious thing we have. Everyone wants to live a life of meaning. However, being busy filling our lives with things to do is not 'living'. Besides, when we do, we don't have any time to really think about living. We need to ask the big questions about life, to get out of our small picture thinking and focus on living a life of real purpose. At the end of the day, if we don't know what we're living for, we haven't yet lived.

The seemingly haphazard, random, and arbitrary events that comprise the story of our lives, begin to form a coherent and purposeful narrative, when we view them from a divine perspective. With the wisdom of retrospective insight, we have, on countless occasions, learned to acknowledge that coincidence is but another way of choosing to remain anonymous.

“If I am not for myself, then who is for me; and if I am (only) for myself, then who or what am I? And if not now, then when?” is such an inspiring and motivating message. We are all created for a specific purpose - there is no other 'me'. We are here for others, beating the 'me' in mind, how can we make a difference to the world? There is no time like the present. If we are not a better person tomorrow than we are today, what need do we have for tomorrow?

We don't speak because we have the power to speak; we speak because we don't have the power to remain silent. Whoever saves a life, it can be considered as if s/he saved the world. This is the essence of the value that each of us bring to the world. We are wise when we learn from every situation and person, and we are strong when we overcome our inclinations; we are rich when we are satisfied with our lot, and we are honourable when we honour each other. According to the effort, is the reward.
