Our trip to China - September 2017

12 Mar 2018   Shanti Gowans

When asked to join the 'China Tourism Destination Mission 2017', Peter suggested it would be a wonderful chance to get a taste of China, and we had an incredible time and feel blessed by the invitation. Travelling expands a person's horizons to experience the world we live in, with body and soul.

China is a country of complete diversity, rich in culture and history, and each city has its own history, incredible sights  and fascinating culture.

The adventure, in brief, took us to these places:

Xian
Xian is a city with an illustrious past, but it is best known for those enigmatic Terracotta Warriors. It is one of the four ancient capitals of Shaanxi province, and the starting point of the fabled Silk Road. We were fortunate enough to take a stroll on the beautifully preserved 14th century city walls that enclose Xian's old town and were enthralled by a performance of Tang Dynasty dancing.

Mt Emei
Mt Emei is the cradel of the Buddhist religion in China, with the first temple built here, on its peak, in the 1st century. Very humbling to soak up the diverse natural beauty of the mountains, lush vegetation and inconspicious temples and their settings, with strong reminences from a movie favourite during our silent meditation retreats.

Changdu
is the gateway to the Sichuan province and the home of the cuddly Giant Pandas.

Leshan
At Leishan we took a short boat trip to visit the 71 metre Grand Buddha, completed in 803AD, which is carved into a hillside overlooking the confluence of the Dadu and Min Rivers.

Shanghai, Xian and the Terracotta Warriors, Imperial Beijing and The Great Wall, Tiananmein Square, watch giant Pandas play, the vibrant markets, the Forbidden City

We travelled with a group from 12-21 September 2017. Our groups are friendly, sociable and share a passion for advanture.

I am very happy to announce that Peter and I will be travelling on a similar Australia-India education mission to India10-18 November 2017.
