Breaking Free from Habits of Mind

28 Nov 2015   Shanti Gowans

While travelling on the back of an elephant, up the ramp, the authentic way when the Amber Fort was active, it is obvious that the elephants were trained to obey commands and perform tricks for the amusement of tourists. Intreaguing at first, until particular aspects make you wonder. For instance, these huge, majestic creatures rested with one of their massive front legs tethered to a flimsy stake by a small rope. No chains. No cages. Considering their size, you would think that they could easily break free from such a thin binding. Yet they didn’t. These animals just stood there and made no attempt to escape.

Then, the mahoot (trainer) explained: “Back when they were young and smaller, we use that very same, small-sized rope to tie them and, at that age, it was enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never even try to break free.”

Do you realise that we too have had such chains on us our whole lives? Like these elephants, how many of us go through life holding onto a belief that we cannot do something... Just because we failed at it once before? Or just because someone else told us we couldn’t succeed? Or just because it seemed “impossible”? So many “just because”... So we get locked by imaginary chains; limiting beliefs that hold us back from realising our true potential. These beliefs then dictate our daily habits of thought and action.

The elephants’ brains were conditioned to be bound by the ropes, just as our brains were conditioned to be bound by our negative beliefs. This is why people succeed and fail. And if we want to break free from the chains of failure, all we really need is to rewire our brains for success.

It all comes down to this: if your subconscious ‘blueprint’ is not ‘set’ for success, nothing you learn, nothing you know, and nothing you do will make much of a difference. However, by changing your subconscious programming, you take the first essential step to changing your results. In other words, the key to creating the most profound, lasting and positive change in your life is through the re-wiring of your subconscious patterns.

But no longer. You can break free from all limits. And with the daily practice of yoga and meditation, it couldn’t be easier..
