Circling the Sacred
The teacher entered the classroom and asked her students to prepare for a surprise test. The students waited anxiously at their desks for the exam to begin. The teacher handed out the exam sheets of paper with the text facing down, as usual. When they were all handed out, she asked the students to turn over the paper. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions - just a black dot in the centre of the sheet of paper. The teacher seeing the expression on everyone’s faces, said: “Your task is to write about what you see there”.
The students were confused, but started about their inexplicable task. At the end of the session, the teacher took at the exam papers and started reading each one of them out aloud to the students. All of them, with no exception, defined the black dot, trying to explain its position at the centre of the page.
After all had been read, the classroom silent, the teacher went on to explain. “I’m not going to grade you on this. I just wanted to give you something to think about. Everyone focused on the black dot. No one wrote about the white space of the paper, which is similar to what happens in our lives. We insist on focusing in on the dark spot, the health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relationship with a family member or work colleague, the disappointment with a friend…The dark spots are infinitisimally tiny when compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds and disturb our peace".
Circle the sacred. Take your eyes away from the black dots in your life. Enjoy each and every one of your blessings, each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live your life filled with love.
