The Gift of Giving
Carl’s brother gave him a car as a Christmas present. On Christmas evening, Carl came out of his office and saw Paul, a street kid, admiring his new car.
"Is this your car, Mister?" Paul asked.
Carl nodded in affirmation, "My brother gave it to me for Christmas." Paul was surprised. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish..." he hesitated. Carl knew what Paul was going to wish for…he was going to wish he had a brother like the one Carl has. But what the boy said was far beyond Carl’s expectation. "I wish," Paul went on, "that I could be a brother like that."
For a few seconds words failed Carl and then he impulsively added, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?"
"Oh yes, I'd love that."
After a short ride, Paul turned towards Carl. His eyes were glowing and he said, "Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?" Carl smiled a little. He thought he understood what the lad wanted, to show off to his neighbours that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Carl was wrong again.
"Will you stop where those two steps are?" Paul asked. He ran up the steps. In a little while Carl heard him coming back, but he was not running fast. He was carrying his little brother who was physically challenged. Paul sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car. "There my brother, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm going to give you one just likes it...then you can see for yourself all the pretty things outside that I've been trying to tell you about."
Carl got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. Paul, whose eyes were gleaming with joy climbed in beside him and the three of them embarked on a memorable ride.
That Christmas eve, Carl learned the true meaning of: "It is more blessed to give..."
In this season of light, my greatest wish for you is to know the brilliance of the light within you, and to shine it brightly into the world. With all the blessings for a wonderful time this Christmas and I hope you feel all the joy this holy season has to offer.
