Now we are in the swing of things in the new year why not give your life the boost it needs to survive and thrive?
If you are worn out, yoga will change you. After one class, you will feel relaxed, focused and more aware of your body. Below is an explanation of our classes.
PRANAYAMA: MINDFULNESS AND BREATHING for Healing, Energy and Longeity. Mon 9:15-10:30am
Pranayama, the yogic science of breath control, is a powerful way to raise energy and channel it into spiritual growth and life mastery. It balances, strengthens and increases life energy. Prana vidya means knowledge of life force and energy healing, and includes pranayama practice, concentration and mindfulness. Svara is the yogic word for the flow of prana. It is defined by the qualities of the breath and pranic flow. Through a greater awareness of prana, consciousness expands. The result is a peaceful mind, the foundation for expanded awareness.
In the practice of maha yoga pranayama, the breath becomes the flywheel for a healthy mind and body. Diaphragmatic breathing constantly massages the internal organs. This rhythmical motion transmits beneficial messages to the entire autonomic nervous system and encourages all bodily systems to operate optimally. Inhalation and exhalation become one continuous motion, allowing the breath to aid digestion, the assimilation of essential nutrients and the elimination of waste products from the body. This is a powerful way to release energy and channel it into wellbeing, life mastery and spiritual growth.
This class provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the practice and philosophy of pranayama under the guidance of an experienced teacher.
EASY GENTLE YOGA Mon 10:30am. Tues 11:30am. Thurs 11:30am
Low impact yoga that tones and strengthens muscles and improves flexibility. This gentle yoga practice provides many benefits such as increased flexibility and strength, enhanced awareness, appreciation of the body, mental and emotional attentiveness and a sense of overall well-being.
These classes offer you a set 'date' with your mat and are designed for students who would like to move with more awareness in strengthening and stretching poses with functional alignment to help reduce aches and pains, and injuries. Appropriate for beginners, those recovering from an injuries or experiencing chronic pain, or individuals with an established practice who want to slow down on the mat. The ultimate goal of these classes is to move with ease, support a healthy posture, and allow the mind to connect with the body throughout. Students of all ages are welcome.
YOGA STRETCH AND TONE Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs 5:30pm. Fri 9:15am. Sat 10:15am
Practice in our beautiful studio with 55 minutes of gentle, invigorating, flow-style yoga, with a teacher who is trained to meet you at your level, whether you are a beginner or advanced practitioner, followed by a zero pressure introduction to deep relaxation.
Students lie on the floor at the beginning and end of each session, and classes are designed for those who can get up and down from the floor on their own power with ease. Students can expect to strengthen muscles that tend to be under-utilised in addition to stretching and releasing tension from muscles that tend to be tight.
HATHA YOGA Mon 6:30-7:30pm
This is an introductory series to Hatha Yoga. Hatha yoga is a valuable practice for many people because it balances the solar and lunar energy flows in the body. This brings about increased energy and equilibrium. Hatha yoga can be quite an intense physical practice and may not be appropriate for those with recent head or neck injuries, vertigo or severe joint pain, as modifications are needed. We want you to love yoga and are happy to direct you to a class that will be best-suited to your intentions.
RESTORATIVE - GROUND YOGA Tues 10:30-11:30am
Restorative Yoga is a practice using supported poses to relax at multiple levels, release tension, tap into your body’s natural healing and restorative abilities and provide lymph system detoxification. Restorative Yoga is a gentle practice that creates the space and conditions for you to access your wisdom physically, emotionally and mentally. You live in a body that has an amazing system already in place to find the path to health and happiness. You have the ability to heal and thrive when you learn to balance doing with being. Give yourself permission to slow down and nourish yourself.
In this class, we will settle into supported floor poses, long stretches and long holds with intervals, while releasing tension, breathing gently, and allowing gravity to draw us towards the steadiness of the earth beneath us. With the help of straps, blocks, bolsters and blankets to enhance support, even complete beginners, the elderly, and the injured can find comfort in these postures allowing the body to open and release. Breath work is also to be explored as a tool to support the body. Time will be given with each pose and movement to allow the breath to fully integrate into the practice.
The way life mirrors the microcosm and the macrocosm of the Universe is endlessly fascinating. Ancient texts of Yoga indicate that inside the body of a yogi are mountains, valleys, oceans and rivers, and that the moon and stars move in this inner space. When their practice took ancient seekers deep within, they encountered an amazing world beyond rational thought. They used symbols to map this inner journey and, over time, those symbols became the esoteric Chakras (vortices), Granthis (knots) and Nadis (channels) of medieval Hatha Yoga.
Come and practice as the ancient yogis did. Join Shantiji for an experience of chakra awakening. During an extra-long guided shavasana (opening relaxation), Shantiji will offer guided meditation to participants, journeying into the universe inside your body, focusing on the movement of your vital energy from root to crown, through the chakras, granthis and nadis, to remove the obstacles to inner experience and strengthen your vital energy. Then follow up with a gentle flow class that will enable you to shed the stresses of the week and tune yourself inwardly, as you engage in Hatha Yoga rituals: Asana, Pranayama, Bandha, and Mudras. Expect to leave the centre feeling wholly nourished and spiritually aligned. This class is appropriate for all levels of yoga practitioners.
YOGA NIDRA Tues 12:30pm. Wed 6:30pm
Yoga Nidra, deep conscious relaxation, involves total body relaxation practices, breath awareness and guided visualisations. It is a deeply relaxing practice that will bring you to a profound sense of wellness. Experience an hour of Yoga Nidra, the ancient revitalising practice of the Himalayan yogis, in which the practitioner remains conscious during the dreaming state. Resting, heart open and soft, you are already melting into your breath, reconnecting with your own natural rhythm, a practice of deliberate stillness which will set you up for an incredible, well deserved night's sleep. Reduced insomnia, stress relief, better digestion, and an improved quality of sleep, are just a few of the many benefits of Yoga Nidra. Let go of all your tension with this deeply relaxing, rejuvenating and healing guided practice. There is nothing to do. Just lie back and listen. You will experience a profound sense of healing and well-being as a result of this practice.
RELAXATION AND MEDITATION Mon 11:30am. Tues 8pm. Thurs 12.30pm
Most obstacles to your health reside in your mind. When you meditate daily, you change the software of the mind and enhance the body's immune system. Join Shantiji in stillness, as she offers guidance, insight and practical instructions for the curious student interested in navigating the uncertain waters of meditation. Having a quiet, clear mind and an awakened heart, provide the spaciousness and compassion necessary to live life fully in each moment, with each breath. The practice of meditation, (mindfulness/insight/awakening the heart/techniqueless technique), is an excellent complement to your physical yoga practice, and informs your awareness both on and off the yoga mat.
Stressful thought patterns can be compelling, often multiplying difficult situations until they dominate consciousness. Chronic pain is a complex issue. Parkinson’s, MS, Chronic Fatigue and so on are not easily controlled through conventional medicine. Find pain relief here.
In this class we practice concentration, mindfulness, pranayama and slow, long-held yoga stretches, to access the breath and mind-body, and transform stress into openness. You will be encouraged to feel the space around your asana and to listen closely, with total acceptance of your own instincts as you modulate between slowness, stillness and occasional fast flows. Along the way you, will loosen up your neck and shoulders, stretch your hamstrings, open up your hips and move your spine. The goal here is to (re)train the mind away from fight-or-flight type of tangles into the kind of receptive awareness that allows the universal wholeness to spread and move safely through previously fraught hitches and contractions of stressed thoughts, actions and compiled emotions.
By calling up mindful motions and breathing, you can sink below repetitive mental routines, into more a receptive space of real experience and self control. Yoga, over time, can help build internal resources that you can rely upon to provide calming, transformative psychological benefits that will help you to control your pain better, reduce or manage Parkinsons symptoms and improve your strength, flexibility, balance, breathing, coping, mechanism, mental outlook, and overall health and well-being to live your life more fully.
This program is for those living with pain, stress, Parkinsons, MS, chronic fatigue, auto-immune diseases. For all levels of yoga practitioners.
Join us for a journey of self-discovery, fun and empowerment for our short drama courses that encourage self-expression and develop public speaking and performance skills for life.
Since the beginning of time, human beings have engaged in the ritual of theatre as an expression of art and entertainment and for so many other purposes; to develop community awareness; teach citizens about their society; challenge people to think differently; and even as means of propaganda and political persuasion.
Acting, movement and collaborative work will open you up to new worlds and perspectives, as you experience what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes, in scenarios you may have never before experienced. You will also learn many skills and techniques about the art of theatre making.
This is an experiential, on-the-floor class, where you will learn to connect with your senses, sensibilities, your body, mind and heart and voice.
Fee: $100 x 4 weeks. or $35 drop-in

PERENNIAL PSYCHOLOGY OF THE BHAGAVAD GITA 1-2pm Monday satsung. February 2017
The Bhagavad Gita is the fountainhead of Eastern psychology and a practical, spiritual handbook for Self-Realisation and daily life that teaches you how to be creative and confident in every circumstance. It describes two paths in life: one that is skilful and leads to fulfillment and the other that that leads to sorrow. It is presented in the form of a dialogue-discussion between your own deepest and wisest self (called Krishna in the text), and the spiritual seeker who is confused by ego, emotion and doubt (called Arjuna in the text). Through readings, lectures, practice, sharing and ongoing discussions, designed to help you find your own daily life path, each of us will see different layers of the subtle nuances of this advice, the wisdom that your deeper self imparts, will be brought out. These sessions provide you with a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of how skillful actions and wise choices can effect your entire well-being. No previous knowledge or Gita preparation is necessary.

Yoga with a partner is essentially a fun expression of love and service, and a healing modality. In this workshop you will support, assist and extend your partner in simple Yoga stretches, asanas and yoga massage, and you will receive the same from your partner. No prior bodywork experience is required, as this workshop is designed for the beginner. and fully supervised. You will learn at least one technique for each area of the body, from the head to the toes. The beneficial effects are numerous; from deep relaxation, improved sleep quality, and release of muscular tension and mental stress. This workshop is not limited to romantic partners. Bring a relative, friend or someone you will like to practice yoga with, or come on your own and we will partner you up with someone.
1-4pm. Sunday
From the experiences of our lives, we make stories about who we are. These manifest in how we hold our bodies, breathe, think, feel, and move in relationship to others and the environment. These stories have energy and create energy patterns, both healthy and unhealthy ones. If we can recognise our stories, our patterns, our underlying energies, we can change them. When these change, our lives change. This course offers a concentrated overview of the human condition from ancient yogic and modern psychological perspectives.
We review yogic concepts relating to understanding the mind, including koshas, kleshas, samskaras, and the gunas. We explore how these concepts fit together with western ideas of mind and how they may be useful in understanding and treating dysfunction. Students will learn Shanti yoga therapy methods for managing or assisting in healing psychological difficulties, including depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress responses.
YOGA REFUGE IN REALTIY - Free Information Session. Sunday 1-4pm. Date tba
The radical Yoga path of taking refuge in reality marks the decision to commit oneself wholeheartedly to the Yogic path and to further one’s practice and training. It is a formal commitment to being a Yogi, following the examples of an enlightened mindset set by the sages, the teachings on commitment, service and purpose (dharma) and joining a community (sangha) of fellow practitioners.
We will look at the history and meaning of taking refuge, which is a step common to all Buddhist traditions, based on the teachings of the Maha Yogi Buddha Shakyamuni.
What does becoming a Yogi mean? Why would one want to take that step? As we enter the stream of Yoga dharma, how do we integrate the teachings of Yoga into our lives in a meaningful way? Directly engage with Shantiji in an in depth exploration of what it means to live a real life, to connect from the heart, and to find a true refuge from the storms of our own suffering. There is no commitment in attending this talk, and all those interested in learning more about Yoga are invited and will find this talk of particular value. If you plan to attend, please email [email protected]

LIVING PAIN FREE - The Yogic Approach to Chronic Pain
Are you ready to find the pain relief you’ve been looking for? Ayurveda and Yoga give us much in the way of philosophy and practices to help us understand chronic pain and suffering. Through this perennial wisdom, you can learn to understand yourself and your condition from a new perspective and to create a new relationship with your body and mind.
One thing that is clear about healing pain, is that we must consider the body as a whole system and not just treat the symptoms. Thus the new medicine model must focus on optimal function of the whole body. This is the key to pain relief. We will look into the current findings of pain science and treatment of chronic pain and integrate the practices and philosophy of Yoga and Ayurveda. These sciences can help you to find your way into a practice that can be both healing and transformative. Current findings in the field of pain science are showing how we can change our relationship with our bodies through the relationship we have with our minds and nervous system. You will learn practices of asana, pranayama and meditation that will be beneficial for chronic pain, fibromyalgia, headaches, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.
This series is for you if:
