About The Institute:

The Meditation Institute, Australia's leading education and meditation retreat centre celebrates 34 years of experiential learning, workshops, retreats, conferences. TMI was founded on the conviction that a new vision is needed for society, its values and its relationship to the earth. Over the last decade the Institute has become a centre of excellence with an international reputation for the inspiration, quality and breadth of its teaching.

Both on the Gold Coast and in the beautiful Beechmont countryside, away from the pressures of everyday life, participants enjoy a mixture of learning, reflection and the exchange of ideas and experiences. Much of the unique character of the place comes from the way the community each day creates an expression of a sustainable lifestyle. As well as immersing themselves in course material, participants share in essential activities which include cooking, housekeeping and gardening.

Whether it is in terms of intellectual and emotional stimulation, spiritual refreshment, multi-cultural vitality or the peace and repose of a great rural estate, Nirvana continues to offer an exceptional setting for radical experiment. The environment creates a sense of the wholeness of life and provides the context for a deep and potentially transformative learning experience. Here people find refreshment and often, new direction. They find that they have touched a source of inspiration and are reminded that there are others who share their deepest values about life and its meaning.

Five main themes reflect TMI's vision:
• Wellbeing
• Wisdom practices
• Arts and culture
• Business and leadership
• World change and service

On the Gold Coast, The Meditation Institute's international head-quarters, services are conducted in Southport, and at Nirvana, our eco-meditation retreat Beechmont. Programs are also offered at Sydney and affiliated centres. On offer are residential retreats, corporate services, recuperative and restorative programs, daily morning and evening yoga classes, meditation and deep relaxation sessions, spiritually motivating talks, books, products, Yoga teacher training courses, Ayurvedic life-style consultant and practitioner training, all designed to help you discover the best in yourself.

Health and Wellbeing

To accelerate the shift from a treatment-based perspective to a new, broader and more profound health and wellness culture that reduces expenses, empowers individuals, enhancing their quality of life.
People are seeking solutions. To address the growing dissatisfaction with the current, incomplete, insufficient model applied to human health and seek a more integrated approach to health for the whole person for the mind, body and spirit.
Informed, active citizens create a healthy world. Information and education is essential to address a growing concern over chronic health conditions and the state of the world which has now reached a critical mass.
Prevention is preferable to treatment. Individuals, scientific research, local and national governments, corporations and religious institutions need to shift the focus of the culture and its incentives towards wholeness and wellness.
The human body: more than the sum of all its parts. Health approaches that treat the body like a machine limit an individual's ability to heal failing to address the root causes of health problems.
To improve life. We need to shift from basic science and limited concepts about health to multi-disciplinary research and practices that incorporate multiple variables including individual differences.
Environmental wellbeing is linked to our wellbeing. We destroy the nourishment, clean air and clean water that we require to thrive on when we pollute our earth, food, air and rivers.

The Healing Path
Take the next step in your healing journey. Based on credible science, ancient wisdom, human experience, optimism and practicality and designed to help participants re-evaluate their options in self-help and self-healing techniques together with addressing fears and misunderstandings. We have an unprecedented opportunity to advance a new model of wellbeing in integrative healing for the 21st century. By working together and uniting around shared values, we can bring about the power and spirit of healing to one of the most serious challenges facing us today. We invite you to work with us towards this end.

TMI provides the opportunity to refocus and go deeper, to address any issues or obstacles, deal with setbacks, transform fear and learn new techniques and practical tools to facilitate your healing process from the inside out - i.e. by using your own personal resources for healing. These include meditation, ayurveda, yoga, breathing techniques, When you practice the art of body awareness and visualisation. contemplation, meditation, deep relaxation and self healing you equip yourself with tools that will help you reconnect with your body and reactivate your body's healing energies.

• Managing your wellness
• Learn the art of living
• Live in harmony and balance
Use the tools of breath, body awareness, mind and spirit.

Educational Focus

TMI changes people’s lives. It is a place for reflection and engagement, for the heart and the head, for the individual and the community. Through learning, sharing and celebration it is empowerment in practice and if for a moment an opportunity presents itself to become a “graduate” of this very different place of learning, then seize it.

Through our courses and residential programs the Institute seeks to promote those human values that are against all that is dehumanising in industrial societies and develop modest initiatives based on the human-scale, conjoining the spiritual and the practical that we so passionately believe.

The volume of education continues to increase, yet so do pollution, exhaustion of resources, and the dangers of ecological catastrophe. If still more education is to save us, it would have to be education of a different kind: an education that takes us into the depth of things.
E.F. Schumacher author: Small is Beautiful

TMI focuses its courses on a range of ecological themes:
• globalisation, sustainability and alternative development models
• ecological perspectives on psychology, spirituality and philosophy
• holistic science: chaos, complexity and systems thinking
• ecological design and technology

Whatever the focus of study, each course aims to bring together people who wish to:
• interweave meditation, reflection, shared work, study, field trips and community life
• explore issues of sustainability, equity and wholeness
• take an active part in the self-organising processes that enhance individual and group learning.

The Programme offers a variety of drop-in and residential courses including :
• A core programme of two and three week courses
• Five-day courses for business people on the theme of Business and Sustainability
• Five-day courses for educationalists: The Roots of Learning
• A one-year full-time BA in Holistic Peace

TMI is also available for group bookings.

Publications
The Meditation Institute supports and encourages the growing interest in Shantiji's teachings which help make the wisdom of the ancients accessible to those who aspire in our modern world, to some deeper and higher meaning for their lives. She has authored more than a 100 papers, 21 books, 22 audio cassettes, 5 videos, CDs and various other courses and literature which are mail ordered all over the world.

The Team, teachers and staff

A community group of supportive team players is helping us to create an organic, educational, meditation eco-retreat here in the pristine ancient rainforest of Lamington. The mountain of work is spearheaded by by an amazing team of Peter Gowans, Benni and Karen Ruckli at Nirvana and the administration team of Tanya Ristic, Christine Gleeson, Sonja Stauder and Peter Gowans. Together with our instructing team of Joyce Lawson, Anne MacCallum, Sonja Stauder, Lyn Moore and Sue Brown, our children’s yoga instructors, Tanya Ristic, Nicole Ugarte, Linda Bailey, Sue Brown, Anne MacCallum; and Louise Hall teaching music and song at Shanti Yoga, Lyn Moore website manager and Hilary Sullivan masterminding our artwork and design, our vision has expanded and we are moving forward very strongly.

Our vision encompasses eco-sustainable design with optimum re-use and recycling, food gardens, local enterprise, a creative arts community, Ayurvedic holistic health spa, yoga and meditation. Interest in the meditation retreat is strong...and it’s important to the aims of the project that we find like-minded people to be involved. We provide experiential learning, creative renewal and rejuvenation opportunities to inspire both visitors and residents and offer emphirical and theoretical education coupled with a daily program of sadhana for spiritual experiences. A vibrant hub of education, creativity and conversation is experienced in the kitchen, dining room, library and meeting room. To further our educational mission of cultivating a shift in thinking, values and actions necessary for a healthy, more peaceful, just and ecologically sustainable society, this Easter we introduced ‘Embrace the art of living’ involving business, government and community leaders.

THE MEDITATION INSTITUTE VISION:
WORLD CHANGE & SERVICE

The deep yearning from the common heart of humanity for a spiritual vision that soars beyond the constricting walls of dogma, tracing the lines of connection and the shared ideals and the celebratory magic are the fingers of faith joined in a single hand at the centre of all the world’s spiritualities that erase the false distinctions and inspire each of us to live and worship from a common soul. It's time to stop converting one another and start delving into each other’s spiritual riches. Dwelling on doctrines so easily divides people even those within the same religious tradition. What the divine is asking of us is Service and Compassion (including Justice and Celebration). These exploration can encompass:
• relating to creation • relating to divinity • relating to ourselves •relating to the future. Shantiji invites you to participate in a group experimenting in a new social vision.

Five main themes reflect our vision:
• Wellbeing
• Wisdom practices
• Arts and Culture
• Leadership and Business
• World change and service

The streams that follow from this vision include:
1. COSMOLOGY
So much of our thinking is boring and lacking in awe and mystery. We need to reset out thinking in a cosmological context. We are are citizens in a universe - a living, teeming, diverse, moving sacred universe. We live among other stars, atoms, galaxies. Our essential role is to link the microcosm with the macrocosm in the context of thanksgiving and praise for our amazing existence in the universe and all its creative wonders. All its parts (microcosms) are small universes in themselves.

2. BODY
We live a few paces outside the body. We are so much in the mind. We need to bring the body back, to celebrate the body-spirit - God in human form. Our bodies are the temples of the universe. Star bodies, suns, earth-bodies, winged, finned, four-legged, two-legged bodies are all our brothers and sisters. Movement moves the breath-spirit, our muscles and blood and moves us together in a shared sense of community and celebration. It is essentially the inhaling and exhaling of the one breath of the universe, our spirit. It can be accompanied by the beating of the drum, providing a common heartbeat reminding us of the time in mother’s womb, where we were so much at peace and the heartbeat of Mother Earth, beating on our behalf.

3. PLAY, REST, WORK
We need to bring play back, replaying joy in the universe to cheer the inner strength of people. It’s is not about rules and regulations, conforming and obediences. Meaning cannot be sustained by structure and order alone. Play is about unselfconsciousness. We need to provide the space - ample enough and relaxed enough to invite the divine child out to play. Joy is the human’s noblest act. The clown-god dwells in each of us and needs encouragement to grow into its destiny. Cut off from its own child and fool, the complex no longer has anything to tell us.

Folly and immaturity are projected onto others. Without folly the complex has no wisdom, only knowledge - serious, depressing, hoarded in an academic vault or used as power. Divinity laughs and gives birth to a child. The child laughs back at the creator
and together they give birth to the spirit. The whole trinity (divinity, child, spirit) laughs and gives birth to creation. If we are born of laughter, laughter is among our divine origins and our source. Listen, can you hear God laughing?

4. DARKNESS AND LIGHT
We need to make room for darkness, silence and suffering that is shared. Just as joy is cosmic and ripe for celebration so too is our pain cosmic. We come to each other with our wounds that deserve and indeed demand to be acknowledged. For this we need to provide silent spaces and silent times - the space betweeen the drumbeats and heartbeats, to let go of verbal prayer and enter into the realm of silence which is so rich a part of a living mysticism. Silence is not just absence of speech or noise. It is being with being. Silence becomes the occassion for emptying ourselves of our projections and letting others be and letting the divine be.

There is so much silence in the universe. Astronauts have been awakened to their mysticism by the silence in space.
We need to embrace the dark and not fight it. In appreciating the power of darkness and night we enjoy the smell of candles and incense, banish the left brain’s unceasing quest for the verbal and immerse ourselves in the basic mystery of the universe - a universe which includes our bodies and imagination - no separation, within from without, psyche from universe. Fire takes on special meaning. Moon rituals evoke mystery. Embracing the holy darkness of our origins in the womb, empty of all we have, connected to the rest of our lives and to the universe itself, accepting the emotional catharsis that would accompany deep mourning, we return all suffering to the universe.

Without a living cosmology our deepest pain has to go underground because it is so real and so very huge. We spend our lives concealing our pain and wasting immense energy in doing so. With sorrow, with jubilation, we let the pain out so that we can creatively flow to do something with the pain. If pain remains inside, rancid terror, sentimentalism, violence, stifling of creativity and ever increasing pessimism and guilt are its legacy. You must not be afraid of the dark night of the soul because it is in darkness that birth takes place. We need occasions for naming and sharing our cosmic pain, grieving together and knowing that lamentations are in order given todays crises of earth, youth, sexuality, injustice. For, to work with our deep wounds, the pre-requisite (for creativity) is the work of mourning - over the irreversibility of the past without extinguishing the spark of ecstasy.

5. CELEBRATION
We need to reinvent celebration and choose meaningful themes that embrace a cosmological agenda, lamentations for Mother Earth, lost or wounded child, celebration of the mystery of the human body, sexuality, rites of passage, celebration of the power of play, animals, each other, ourselves.

6. PARTICIPATION AND COMMUNITY
We need to bring participation back. We cannot sit passively and watch the universe happen around or outside us, for we, along with all other creatures are this universe. Boredom comes from a lack of participation. We are attempting to live a paradigm and world view that is just plain tired. All living creatures are busy expressing the cosmos. We need to offer ourselves and each other that holy opportunity.

We are commited to learning and sharing knowledge to help people enhance their lives; empower individuals to recognise their abilities and responsibility in healing themselves. We also choose to maintain a supportive work environment that fosters our community of teachers, students and the general public.

We have an unprecedented opportunity to advance a new model of wellbeing in integrative healing for the 21st century. By working together and uniting around shared values, we can bring about the power and spirit of healing to one of the most serious challenges facing us today. We invite you to work with us towards this end.

7. NATURAL GRACE
Grace is represented in and as the radiance of the universe’s glory and the perfect replica of the cosmic nature that sustains the universe by some powerful command that was there from the beginningless beginning. Through grace all things came to be.
Not one thing had its being but through grace.

Mindlessness is sentimental, anti-intellectual and lacks a cosmology. In such a consciousness we wallow in our own personal feelings so deeply that we never emerge to join the struggle of compassion to relieve other’s pain and to make both justice and celebration happen on a community scale. The human race seems to be rotting its mind with slowly deteriorating religion. Mistakes about creatures contribute to mistakes about the universe and mistakes about god. Our failure to appreciate a living cosmology has led to a reliance on a distorted theology. Without mind and mindfulness, religion is reduced to mere acts of will. The loss of mind - knowing our place in the universe - for there is no mind without cosmos and no universe without mind.

Yoga is grounded in deep spiritual experience and tradition. It creates a mindfulness which instructs us to experience the presence of grace around and through us. It opens the minds and hearts to the universe, to what is and to where we are: citizens of a vast twenty-billion-year history that is still unfinished and which we are called to complete. Citizens of one hundred billion galaxies, of which ours is a mysteriously small one. A mindful yoga, then, awakens the mind rather than dulls it, praises the mind rather than diminishes it, resurrects the mind rather than rots it.

Through our deepest and innermost responses to our world - to hunger, thirst, torture and the threat of annihilation we touch that boundless heart. The heart that breaks open can contain the entire universe. All is registered in the boundless heart.

The task at hand is to explore the universe and to understand isness. The renissance happens not from the outside in but from inside out. The soul stirs. And new images are born. And lived out. And taken to amazing heights of adventure and risk and new possibilities. The young are excited by this call to adventure and awakened to their role in a living cosmology. Assured that their life and life decisions regarding education, work and relationship are not trivial. They are indeed part of a twenty-billion-year history and mystery and that they have a cosmic task to perform.

Ayurveda and Yoga
The harmonious functioning of all aspects within an individual is essential for balanced health. Health and disease result from the complex interaction of many factors, including physical, mental, emotional, genetic, spiritual, environmental and social. When Ayurveda looks at the treatment of any condition, eighty percent of any improvement will result from changes in a person's diet, routine, breathing and how we respond to stressful environmental influences. Once these factors are in place, herbs and therapies can help speed up the process, allowing the mind-body's natural ability to make the necessary and appropriate positive changes.

Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultations
