KUNDALINI - SHANTI YOGA- STUDIES TWO

Acharya
Kundalini, Chakras, glands, channels, Ayurveda

Building on the foundational knowledge established in Yoga Studies One, Yoga Studies Two progresses to more advanced practices and a deeper understanding of the supporting concepts. In addition, it introduces five main areas, outlined below.

How the different branches of yoga (studied in Yogic Studies One) interrelate is investigated, as are the primary texts from which knowledge of these paths is derived. Looking at Yoga not just in the form of practice but as a life process, then every action will become part of Karma Yoga, every understanding will be part of Jnana Yoga, every effort that you make will be part of Raja Yoga and every experience you may have will become part of Dhyana Yoga.

i The Heart of Movement
Basic anatomy and functional physiology for Yoga Teachers.
Knowledge of the anatomical bases of the human form, with an emphasis on understanding the musculoskeletal system. Physiology is the study of how the body functions at cellular, molecular, tissue, organ and system levels. This helps with understanding how to reduce pain, stiffness, anxiety and promote well-being through the chemical and cellular changes that occur within the body.

ii Overview of Yoga anatomy & physiology
Yoga does not view the human system merely as a physical body. The Vedic seers expounded that the human system was a holistic matrix of five distinct but symbiotic layers. Merely looking at one layer might not provide the reality of our situation, nor will it offer all the solutions that are possible. Yoga is an important system of practice presenting various tools to explore the different dimensions of our holistic human system, recognise each one's presence, importance, and influence on the others, reach each of them & understand the working described in the Vedic teachings.

Body awareness; the concept of psychic anatomy; the higher awareness of the subtle body, its stored power, Kundalini and the microcosmic centres, vortexes of energy, Chakras, that are the blue-prints and fore-runners of the endocrine glands; higher physiology in the Yogic understanding of the origins of life and consciousness - are all Shanti Yoga Two studies.

iii Ayurveda, the science of healthy living and self healing.
The Ayurvedic way of life prepares one's physical body for Yoga. You will learn the science of constitution and body-type which relate to keeping your body-type in balance, and maximising your health and longevity. You will learn how to use food, herbs, exercise, lifestyle factors, purification measures as tools for health.

iv Personalised Spiritual Practice, sadhana, with Yogic terminology on which Yogic observation and practice is based.

v Asana-2 to purify, align and strengthen. You will need to be competent in 400+ practices as taught in Shanti Yoga Studies 1 & 2 and be able to impart them at classes.

RAJA YOGA - SHANTI YOGA - STUDIES THREE
Samrajya
Sutras & Raja Yoga. Poise, Balance

We cover two major areas of study, which include the inspiration behind Yoga, The Sutras, which will take up the bulk of this course, together with some explorations around the mind-body. Thus Shanti Yoga Three studies include:

1. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the most fundamental text on Yoga, and the material for Level 3 dates back to the period between the second and the end of the third centuries. Patanjali is often wrongly regarded as the ³father of Yoga". His great contribution however was to have compiled and systematised existing knowledge and given Yoga a philosophical shape that allowed it to
compete with other contemporary schools of thought. The 196 verses (sutras) of the text are short aphorisms, which are grouped in four chapters:
i. The first chapter entitled 'Samadhi pada' presents the definitive sutra on Yoga and describes our state of mind in Yoga
and in no-Yoga.
ii. The second chapter, 'Sadhana pada' presents Yoga as practice.
iii. Chapter three, 'Vibhuti pada' discusses the results that those who practice Yoga can achieve and also discusses the dangers of these changes.
iv. The fourth chapter, 'Kaivalya pada' concerns the freedom to which Yoga can lead.

2. The Mind-Body.
The body is both an expression of our present experience and an embodiment of our history. Our postures, how we move, touch and receive touch, the energetic statements that our bodies make - all these factors are rich with information about our individual and collective experience of life. Our bodies reflect and inform our thinking, and our thinking influences how we
arrange our bodies. This interaction is an everchanging dance. What is hidden from our conscious awareness may be revealed and considered when we pay attention not only to our emotional or mental/cognitive process but also to the process of the body. The body is not a concrete event. It's a molecular process - a moving event.

Yoga Studies Three text books and study material includes:

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali translation and commentary by Shanti Gowans
Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda
BHAKTI YOGA - SHANTI YOGA - STUDIES FOUR
Hari
Focus, Concentration, Relaxation and Stillness.

The fundamentals of Yoga do not lie in asana and pranayama but in awareness in every action and combining body, mind and spirit.

Post graduate studies in a Yoga-based stress management program that is being used successfully in hospitals, mental-health settings, seniors' care, stress management programs and corporate wellness. Together with deep systematic relaxation to release all tension, the breath is used to draw the mind and the senses inward, renewing fluidity to mind and body, relieving
fatigue and depression.

Yoga practices in preparation for Concentration and Meditation
The cross-legged Yoga Asanas
Locks and seals, Bandhas
Gestures, Mudras with their relative health benefits, other values and uses are also a focus in Yoga Studies Four.
Yoga Studies Four text books and study material:

Concentration by Shanti Gowans
Relaxation and Self Healing by Shanti Gowans
Kriyas, Bandhas, Mudras
Bhakti Yoga by Swami Vivekananda

JNANA YOGA - SHANTI YOGA - STUDIES FIVE
Jnani
The Gita, Dharma & Karma

Shanti Yoga Studies Five text books and study material:

Bhagavad Gita
Jnana Yoga by Swami Vivekananda
Karma Yoga by Swami Vivekananda
Making Life Work by Shanti Gowans
The physical repertoire is built around the poise and balance in Yoga. Balance is the cosmic interplay of spirit and matter. This body-work connects mind with body creating an awareness of Self as whole. Balance postures concentrate the mind and release emotions from the body, through which healing, learning and growth happen. We are then able to live and work at our highest potential and in greater harmony with ourselves, fellow human beings and nature.

YOGA THERAPY - SHANTI YOGA - STUDIES SIX
Swami
Rejuvenation

One does not need to be a contortionist to practice ShantiYoga. In fact many students are attracted to this stye because of its accessibility. Age and ill health should not present as barriers to participating.

Learn to provide an adapted program of safe Yoga practices for the 'flexibily challenged' and people with physical limitations that can be followed up at home without pain, fatigue, boredom or the fear of injury. Addressing varying levels of ability and starting people wherever they are - stiff and out of shape, sick, weak, aged, convalescing, coming out of substance abuse, injury etc. Modifying the asana to the person, rather than the person to the asana, helps each individual to find the safest most
comfortable way to practice Yoga with compassion and without judgement. Present an entire program to loosen, de-tox, stimulate, heal the glands, improve health, structure and functioning of the body. ShantiYoga is actively working towards making its facilities and courses suitable to people with disabilities. Although we are not as yet equipped to cater for
all needs, considerable steps have been taken in this direction.

Proper alignment
Countering the negatives of gravity and ageing in Yoga.
Specialist instruction to the infirm, elderly, pregnant mothers, private pupils.
Safety requirements - dangers, cautions, modifications.
The grace of subtle alignment.

Restful yoga for stressful times, mental health in troubled times - $1550
Yoga therapeutics and complimentary therapies in rehabilitation and for the treatment of body, emotional and mental disorders.Shanti Yoga is a deeply personal and experiential inquiry into our own body, heart, mind and life. It helps us develop sensitivity to our present conditions and offers clear methods that work across the entire spectrum of human experience. It encourages release from our habitual ways and cultivates a stability of awareness that enables us to rest in the open ground of our essential nature.

Shanti Yoga practices encourage an intimacy with our own immediate, felt experience. By exploring embodiment, grounding and energetic alignment we can deepen awareness, self understanding and self healing. This creates a space for our deepest life to unfold. Increased physical vitality, emotional stability and clarity of mind are a natural consequence of regular practice.

The harmonious functioning of all aspects within an individual is essential for balanced health. Health and disease result from the complex interaction of many factors, including physical, mental, emotional, genetic, spiritual, environmental and social. When Yoga and Ayurveda looks at the treatment of any condition, eighty percent of any improvement will result from changes in diet, routine, breathing and how we respond to stressful environmental influences. Once these factors are in place, herbs and therapies can help speed the process, allowing the mind-body’s natural ability to make the necessary and appropriate positive changes.

THE YOGA SUTRAS

The yoga teachings of Patanjali $1550
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the most fundamental text on Yoga dates back to the period between the second and the end of the third centuries. Patanjali's great contribution was to compile and systematise existing knowledge on Yoga and give Yoga a philosophical shape that allowed it to compete with other contemporary schools of thought. The 196 verses (sutras) of the text are short aphorisms, which are grouped in four books that explain the nature of higher consciousness, the practice of yoga, the supernormal powers that can come from this practice and the state of final liberation.
