These critical socio-emotional competencies address many of the barriers and challenges we face that drive inappropriate behaviour, such as alcohol and drug use, violence, gambling, bullying, and so on. Positive development in thought and action arises from healthy mental habits, that are supportive of and conducive to positive attitudes and behaviour about oneself and others.

Healthy socio-emotional development usually involves skills that promote healthy living, and enable us to calm ourselves down when we are agitated and anxious, manage our behaviour when we are angry, initiate friendships and resolve conflicts respectfully. We are also able to make ethical and safe choices, as well as contribute constructively to our family and community.

Emotional intelligence, social awareness and social competency, together with compassionate and positive attitudes, arise from the first two limbs of classical yoga, the abstentions (yamas) and observances (niyamas). Adaptable, coping strategies (asana), the ability to focus (yoga breathing and concentration), self-manage, stay calm and make appropriate choices and decisions (yoga relaxation and meditation) are all skills that are cultivated by consistent, supportive, integrated, and enhanced Shanti Yoga and mindfulness practices.

Shanti Yoga Mindfulness practices are an education in awareness, self, motivation, self-regulation, contemplative perspectives, and wellbeing that address the whole person, maximise emotional and social development, and establish the foundations for overall success in living, loving, and learning for life.

Engaging in the three teachers of truth about ourselves, the sat gurus and tools in Shanti Yoga are the body, the breath, and the mind.

- The body is the satguru, the teacher of truth about ourselves, through all of our experiences.

- The breath is the satguru, the teacher of truth about all of our relationships.

- The mind is the satguru, the teacher of truth about ourselves through intimacy (into-me-I-see) with all things.

With the skills of self-awareness and self-management enhanced, other competencies such as social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making, can be built successfully, creating a life that is balanced and resilient. Regular, ongoing Shanti Yoga practices, with their synergy between contemplative practice, education, and body-breath-and-mind integration, result in decreased stress, attention deficit issues, depression and anxiety, and increased benefits in physical health, psychological well-being, social relations, and overall performance in work-study-life.

Let us get together and explore Emotional Well-being.
